Local Help with Ilona
When you're in Bali, sometimes the question isn't:
“Where should I go?”
It's:
“Is this normal?”
Maybe the price feels too high.
Something doesn't sound right.
You don't understand what someone is telling you.
Or you simply don't know what to do next. That's when you message Ilona.
You can ask things like:
• “Am I being overcharged?”
• “Does this price sound normal?”
• “Does this look suspicious?”
• “Is this how things normally work here?”
• “Can you help me understand what they're saying?”
• “Can you explain this to my driver?”
• “My pickup hasn't arrived. What should I do?”
• “I'm not sure where I'm supposed to go.”Sometimes you don't need someone to take over.
You just need a local perspective.
2. WHAT CAN ILONA HELP WITH?
Ilona can help you:
• sense-check a price or situation
• understand how something normally works in Bali
• spot things that don't seem right
• understand everyday Indonesian communication
• explain something to someone local
• suggest the next practical step
• help clarify a situation when something doesn't go as expected
• join a short WhatsApp call when talking is easier than textingAnd sometimes, after helping, Ilona may simply check:
“All sorted?”
That's the idea behind Local Help.
Not someone managing your holiday.
Just someone local looking out for you when you need it.
3. WHAT ISN'T INCLUDED?
Ilona can help you deal with a situation.
She doesn't take it over.
Local Help doesn't include:
• researching different options for you
• finding or sourcing vendors
• planning your itinerary
• making bookings
• managing existing bookings
• negotiating on your behalf
• repeatedly chasing a vendor
• managing complaints or disputes
• running errands
• going somewhere physically
• accompanying you
• supervising other peopleA simple question can sometimes turn into a much bigger job.
If one request starts requiring around 15 minutes or more of active research, communication, coordination or repeated follow-up, Ilona may stop and suggest a more suitable service.
Because at that point...
it's probably no longer Local Help.
4. WHEN CAN I MESSAGE ILONA?
Local Help is available daily:
08:00–20:00 WITA — Bali time
You can still send a message outside those hours.
Ilona will normally pick it up after 08:00.
During service hours, we usually aim to respond within 30 minutes.
Please allow up to 60 minutes.
Ilona may be driving, with family, helping another customer, or simply unable to look at her phone right away.
So yes, Ilona is there when you need some local help.
But she isn't sitting on standby for one customer all day.

Need Ilona at a specific time?
Sometimes you already know when you might need her.
Maybe you're checking into a villa, meeting a driver, picking something up, or dealing with someone where communication might get tricky.
Reserve the time with us in advance.
Once confirmed, Ilona can keep that short window clearer and be more attentive while the situation is actually happening.
The earlier you book it, the better.
Without a confirmed time, normal response times still apply.
So yes, Ilona is there when you need some local help.
But she isn't sitting on standby for one customer all day.
Yes.
Sometimes texting back and forth just makes things more confusing.
If needed, Ilona can join a short WhatsApp voice or video call to help you communicate with someone local.
If you already know you'll need Ilona on a call at a certain time, please reserve the time in advance so she can be ready and more attentive when you need her.
For example:
• your driver
• hotel or villa staff
• a shop or restaurant
• someone you're already dealing with during your tripBut the call is there to help clarify the situation.
Not for Ilona to take over the relationship, negotiate a deal, manage the person, or keep following up afterwards.
Think:
“Can you help me talk to them?”
Not:
“Can you handle them for me?”
Sometimes you don't need an answer.
You actually need something done.
That's where our other Ilona services come in.
LOCAL HELP WITH ILONA
Understand
Something is happening now and you want help understanding it or dealing with it.
Discover
You want help deciding where to go, what to do or how your Bali trip should fit together.
Arrange
You've decided what you want and would like Ilona to handle the booking process.
Go
You need Ilona to physically go somewhere, meet someone or check something on your behalf.
So the easiest way to remember it:
Understand → Local Help
Discover → Plan Bali
Arrange → Book Bali
Go → Site VisitIf something feels unsafe or urgent...
don't wait for Ilona's reply.
For medical emergencies, accidents, police matters, immediate safety issues or anything seriously urgent, contact the appropriate emergency service, hospital, police, your accommodation, insurance provider or relevant professional directly.
Ilona is also not acting as your:
• doctor
• lawyer
• police representative
• immigration adviser
• insurance adviser
• financial adviserShe can help you understand everyday situations and local context.
But some situations need the right professional.
And if you're in immediate danger, Local Help should never be your first call.
Ilona is Indonesian and lives in Bali.
But she also spent almost 20 years living in Sydney, Australia.
So she understands both sides.
How things often work locally...
and why those same things can sometimes feel confusing to an international traveller.
Before SmartBali.Guide, Ilona spent more than 20 years running a destination photography and videography business with her husband.
A big part of that work wasn't photography.
It was people.
Clients away from home.
Families.
Vendors.
Different cultures.
Things going wrong at inconvenient times. And figuring out how to help.
That's the part of Ilona we're bringing into Local Help.
You can also get to know Ilona, her husband and their life in Bali through @povhusbandbali.
Because when you message...
you should know who's on the other side.
Choose how many days you'd like Local Help during your Bali trip.
Your pass is active on the dates agreed with us.
Each day covers:
08:00–20:00 WITA
Multi-day passes normally run on consecutive dates unless we've agreed otherwise.
You're not paying per message.
You're paying to know that during those days...
you have someone local you can ask.
Your pass gives you access to Local Help.
It does not reserve Ilona exclusively for you.
She may also be helping other customers during the day.
Local Help is best for people who are happy exploring Bali independently.
You don't need someone planning every day.
You don't need a concierge following your trip.
You can handle things yourself.
But when something feels strange...
a price doesn't make sense...
communication gets difficult...
or you just want a trusted local second opinion...
you'd rather have someone to ask.
That's Local Help.
Ilona will always try to help when the situation fits the service.
But she may say no when something is unsafe, illegal, inappropriate, outside her knowledge, becoming a bigger task, or better handled by a professional.
And one important thing:
Ilona can help you understand what's happening.
She can't control the driver, hotel, restaurant, vendor, traffic, weather or anyone else involved.
She helps you navigate the situation.
What you decide to do is still up to you.Local Help is designed as just-in-case support.
The best time to get it is before you need it.
Once your pass is active, you can message Ilona whenever one of those small “Is this normal?” moments comes up.
But if a problem is already happening before you purchase Local Help — for example an ongoing dispute, booking problem, payment issue, vendor conflict or something that already needs active handling — please contact us first.
We may still be able to help.
But it may fall outside Local Help and require a different service.
Think of it this way:
Local Help is your backup before something happens.
Not something you switch on only after the problem has already become complicated.
